Back-to-School Immune Support: Why Your Nervous System Is the Real Superpower

Hey there! I know it’s that time again—new school year, new routines, new backpacks… and the inevitable runny noses. If your family’s already been hit with round one of coughs, sniffles, and sleepless nights, you might be wondering, what else can I do to keep everyone healthy?

Most of us immediately think: more supplements. More vitamin C, elderberry syrup, sanitizing wipes, and hand washing. And while all of those help, I want to zoom out for a second—because the biggest immune regulator might not be in your supplement cabinet at all.

It might be in your nervous system.

Stress and the Immune Connection

Let me share a quick story. For years, I thought I had seasonal allergies. Random sneezing fits, some congestion here and there—it just became my “normal.” Then one year, the congestion didn’t stop. Three months straight, no matter where I went or what I ate.

It turned out, it wasn’t allergies at all—it was stress.

All that mental and emotional tension had my nervous system on high alert, which meant my immune system never had a chance to rest and recover.

And I see this all the time in my practice. One client—let’s call her Jenny—has two kids in elementary school. She’s constantly running from drop-offs to work to after-school activities. Every year, she’d say, “As soon as one kid gets better, the other one gets sick.”

She had all the supplements lined up. But what she didn’t realize was that her stress level was setting the tone for the whole family. Kids mirror our regulation. If we’re constantly running on adrenaline, their nervous systems are, too—and that impacts how well everyone fights off those back-to-school bugs.

When Stress Takes the Wheel

When the nervous system is in “fight or flight” mode, the immune system gets pushed to the back seat. Chronic stress raises cortisol levels, and over time, that suppresses immune function.

Ever notice how you power through a busy season—projects, deadlines, tests—and then get sick the moment you finally relax? That’s your body saying, “Okay, it’s time to stop.”

Your body whispers first. Then it gets louder until you listen.

If your body feels like it’s constantly catching up—never quite restored—you’ll stay stuck in that cycle of feeling run down.

Real-Life Shifts for Family Immune Support

So if you’re ready to make this school year different, here are some simple, realistic ways to strengthen your family’s resilience from the inside out:

1. Start the Morning with Calm and Light

Before school, try a one-minute breathing session together—box breathing (inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4) or humming your favorite song for 30 seconds. Step outside for five minutes of natural light before you start your day—it resets the body’s rhythm and supports immune health.

2. Create a Transition Ritual After School

Instead of jumping straight into homework or activities, build in a small reset. Snack time in the car, a quick 5-minute dance party, or a short walk helps everyone decompress and switch gears.

3. Prioritize Predictable Sleep

The immune system repairs itself while we sleep. Regular bedtimes create a sense of safety for the nervous system and deepen restorative rest—consistency matters more than perfection.

4. Stabilize Blood Sugar

Balanced meals with protein and fiber help regulate stress hormones. Try easy after-school snacks like apple slices with nut butter, veggie sticks and hummus, or energy bites (my family’s favorite—recipe linked below!).

5. Practice Parental Regulation

Your kids feel your stress. Even a one-minute pause before pickup—breathing in the car, stretching, or journaling at night—can shift your energy and help your kids co-regulate with calm instead of chaos.

Why It Matters (Especially After 35)

If you’re over 35, TTC, or postpartum, your body’s stress reserves are thinner. Hormones shift, and running on adrenaline isn’t sustainable anymore. Nervous system regulation becomes the foundation—it strengthens not just your immune system, but your entire family’s ability to handle stress and recover faster.

So next time you reach for another supplement, remember: your nervous system is the real frontline of immune defense.

When your family feels safe, rested, and regulated, the immune system can finally do its job.
